Most treatment centers offer multiple levels of care so that each client has access to the individualized attention that they need and deserve. One option for treatment is an intensive outpatient program, or IOP. So what is IOP?

An Overview of IOP Rehab

A woman talks to a counselor as a part of her intensive outpatient treatment which is also known as IOP rehabAn intensive outpatient program is a convenient option that allows clients to live at home or in a sober living situation while attending treatment during the day. While the treatments offered in an IOP rehab are comprehensive, it’s seen as less rigorous than residential or partial hospitalization programs (PHPs). An IOP is perfect for someone that has already completed a residential program. It’s also effective in people with relatively new or mild issues with substance abuse.

The reason that IOP rehab is primarily for those that have already completed a treatment program is that the temptation to use often resurfaces once clients return home. An intensive outpatient program is only effective if clients can cope with cravings and remain sober outside of the treatment facility.

The most important thing to keep in mind about IOPs is that clients have access to all of the same therapies and programs offered to their peers in residential treatment. The only difference is a more flexible schedule and the opportunity to go home in the evenings.

Intensive Outpatient Program at Liberty Bay

The intensive outpatient program at Liberty Bay Recovery is similar to our partial hospitalization program in its clinical delivery but is different in its intensity. An intensive outpatient program is geared towards individuals that step down from PHP and are ready for more freedom in their weekly schedules. Just like the PHP, you may participate in our IOP from home if you wish. Our IOP helps individuals have access to:

  • 15 hours of group counseling weekly
  • Weekly individual sessions
  • Medical appointments monthly or as needed
  • Case management
  • Urine drug screening
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Medication assistance and training

All of these different elements come together to form your individualized treatment plan.

How Long Does it Last?

Our IOP lasts for two to three months. During that time, you need to meet certain requirements before graduation can occur. The following need to be completed to ensure that your investment level has stayed consistent and that you can finish what you start:

  • Completion of all treatment goals created with the help of your therapist
  • Completion of 5th step with a sponsor
  • Medical clearance from the medical director
  • Staff approved aftercare plan to help set you up for success in your transition
  • Participation in Family Therapy Day
  • Completion of all community treatment expectations with your peers

The high standards for completion make our IOP an intensive outpatient program Portland Maine trusts.
