If you are currently recovering from drug or alcohol addiction, you already know that relapse is possible. A relapse prevention plan gives you a clear way to handle cravings, triggers, stress, and high-risk situations before they lead you back to substance use.

A strong relapse prevention plan (also called an RPP) is not about expecting failure; it is about being prepared. Recovery can have its difficult moments, but having a written plan in place for such moments can help you pause, reach out for support, and take the next right step.

Our rehab center in Portland, Maine, can help you build a relapse prevention plan that supports your long-term recovery. With the right plan, you can better understand your emotional, mental, and physical warning signs and respond earlier when relapse risk increases.

If you need support with relapse prevention counseling, call Liberty Bay today at (855) 607-8758.

Relapse Prevention Plan: What to Consider

While it is possible to develop an RPP on your own, you may want to partner with a Liberty Bay treatment specialist who can guide you through the process. A therapist has extensive experience and knowledge with addiction treatment services and relapse prevention.

Relapse prevention counseling can be especially helpful because it gives you a private space to talk through cravings and risks without shame. The goal is to build a plan that feels realistic, not perfect.

A treatment specialist can provide insight into things that you may not have thought about or considered when putting together a plan, such as:

1. Trace Your History with Drug or Alcohol Misuse

It is important to understand what behaviors and patterns led to addiction in the past. By retracing your steps, you can identify the triggers, environments, people, and places that may increase your risk of relapse.

This does not mean blaming yourself. It means learning from your past so you can make safer decisions moving forward. For example, you may notice that stress after work, certain social events, or spending time with people connected to past substance use makes cravings stronger.

A substance misuse relapse prevention plan should include these patterns in clear language. When you know your risks, you can avoid some situations and make a plan for the ones you cannot avoid.

2. Identify the Signs of Relapse

Relapse does not always happen all at once. Many people notice warning signs before substance use happens again. These signs may be emotional, mental, or physical.

An emotional relapse may include isolation, poor sleep, mood changes, skipping meetings, or not asking for help. A mental relapse may include thinking about past use, bargaining with yourself, or believing you can use “just once.” A physical relapse means returning to drug or alcohol use.

For instance, you may arrive at an event where people are drinking, even though you did not expect alcohol to be there. What signs of potential relapse could you expect in that situation? What steps could you take to leave safely, call someone, or lower your risk in that moment?

This is why relapse prevention strategies matter. They help you act early, rather than wait until the craving feels too strong.

3. What Happens if You Do Relapse?

This can be a difficult question to answer. You may not want to even think about relapse as a possibility. However, if you do relapse, you need a plan of action so that one setback does not turn into a longer return to substance use.

Relapse can happen during recovery, but it does not mean treatment has failed or that you have failed. What matters most is what you do next. A relapse response plan may include calling your sponsor, therapist, or treatment center, removing access to substances, attending a support group, and being honest with someone you trust.

If you relapse, do not give up. Recovery is still possible. Substance use disorder support groups, continued therapy, and professional treatment can help you return to your recovery plan.

FAQs

What is a relapse prevention plan?

A relapse prevention plan is a written plan that helps you identify triggers, warning signs, coping tools, and support contacts. It gives you clear steps to follow when cravings or high-risk situations come up.

Why is relapse prevention important in addiction recovery?

Relapse prevention helps you prepare before a crisis happens. It can make it easier to recognize early warning signs, ask for help, and use healthy coping skills instead of returning to substance use.

What are common relapse triggers?

Common relapse triggers include stress, certain people or places, loneliness, conflict, poor sleep, mental health symptoms, and being around drugs or alcohol. Triggers are personal, so your plan should reflect your own history.

What are the stages of relapse?

Many people describe relapse in three stages: emotional relapse, mental relapse, and physical relapse. Learning about the different stages can help you take action before substance use happens.

Can therapy help prevent relapse?

Yes, relapse prevention therapy can help you understand your triggers, build coping skills, and create a plan for difficult moments. Therapy can also support mental health needs that may affect recovery.

What should I do if I relapse?

If you relapse, reach out for help as soon as possible. Call a trusted support person, therapist, sponsor, or treatment center, and return to your recovery plan instead of trying to handle it alone.

Are relapse prevention programs available in Maine?

Yes, relapse prevention support may be available through rehab centers, outpatient programs, counseling, support groups, and aftercare planning. Liberty Bay offers addiction treatment support in Portland, Maine.

How often should I update my relapse prevention plan?

You should update your plan whenever your life, triggers, support system, or treatment needs change. Reviewing it regularly with a counselor can help keep it useful.

Klonopin (clonazepam) is a prescription medication in the benzodiazepine family, often used to treat anxiety disorders and seizures. It works by calming the nervous system, helping users feel more relaxed and at ease.

A controlled substance is any drug that the government regulates due to its potential for misuse, dependence, or addiction. These are categorized into schedules under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, ranging from Schedule I (most addictive) to Schedule V (least addictive).

Klonopin is classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance. It carries a lower (but still significant) risk of dependence and misuse, compared to higher-schedule drugs. In this article, we explore why this is and how to get help if you or someone you know is misusing this benzodiazepine.

What Makes Klonopin a Controlled Substance?

People with epilepsy or anxiety disorders are often prescribed the benzodiazepine Klonopin. Its calming effect comes from decreasing activity in the nervous system, helping the person relax and feel at ease. Unfortunately, it’s this calming effect that makes Klonopin misuse common, leading to dependence and addiction.

Like other Schedule IV medications, Klonopin is often prescribed for brief periods because many people develop a tolerance to the medicine within weeks. The risk of physical dependence increases with the dosage and how often it’s taken.

Many medications prescribed by a doctor are safe and helpful to your health when used correctly. However, some people do abuse prescription medications. Every year, thousands of Americans die from overdoses involving benzodiazepines like Klonopin. Many of these deaths involve a combination of benzodiazepine and opiate misuse.

Controlled Substance Categories

Drugs are divided into five schedules, or categories, based on their potential for abuse and addiction:

Schedule I: Have no legitimate medicinal use and a high potential for misuse (heroin, ecstasy).

Schedule II: These are highly addictive and can be harmful to the user (Adderall, OxyContin).

Schedule III: Have a moderate to low potential for abuse and a reduced risk of addiction and dependence (Tylenol 3).

Schedule IV: Have minimal potential for abuse and a modest risk of addiction (Klonopin, Xanax).

Schedule V: Have limited potential for abuse (cough medication with codeine).

Klonopin Prescription Monitoring Drug Programs (PMDP)

Currently, 49 states have implemented prescription drug monitoring programs. By entering prescriptions into a central database, these programs make it harder for people to “doctor shop” for medicines like Klonopin.

However, some drug firms offer doctors incentives to prescribe more of certain medications. Even so, the availability of Klonopin has been reduced through these monitoring programs. PMDPs also ensure tighter control over controlled substances to lower the risk of Klonopin dependence.

Klonopin Dependence and Abuse

People who misuse benzos, including Klonopin, often switch to heroin because it’s sometimes easier to get than prescription medications. Street drugs are much more dangerous than prescription drugs because they are often mixed with harmful compounds, such as soaps, detergents, or powerful narcotics.

Counterfeit prescription medication, or “pressed pills,” has become common throughout the United States. This means that when Klonopin is bought off the street, there’s no guarantee that the tablets are what they claim to be.

Pressed pills and many other street drugs may contain fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more powerful than heroin. According to the DEA, just 2 mg of fentanyl can be lethal. There is no way of knowing if, or how much of, this deadly drug may be mixed into street drugs.

Treatment for Prescription Medication Dependence

An all-encompassing treatment program may be the most effective choice for someone battling Klonopin misuse or addiction. Many people start taking Klonopin because it makes them feel relaxed. Finding healthy, alternative methods of dealing with stress is a significant part of addiction therapy.

The best drug rehabilitation centers provide a comprehensive treatment plan that includes multiple effective therapies. Some clinics offer dual diagnosis treatment for people struggling with addiction and mental health problems. Therapy, yoga, nutrition, and exercise are all possibilities.

Effects of Stopping Klonopin Use

Depending on how a person quits, Klonopin withdrawal can appear in several ways. One option is to stop without any gradual tapering. This approach means taking your usual dose one day and nothing the next, a method often called quitting “cold turkey.”

This method is unsafe and can be life-threatening for some. In most cases, this withdrawal method is chosen when people run out of medication and are ready to stop, but don’t want to or can’t go to a facility for support.

If you want to stop using Klonopin, a gradual taper is the safest method. Professional guidance adds another layer of protection. Tapering slowly reduces the amount of Klonopin in your system, lessening withdrawal symptoms and helping keep you safe. It also gives your brain and body time to adjust to functioning without the drug.

Reducing Klonopin Dosage: What to Expect

Your ability to tolerate a decreased Klonopin dosage will be assessed before starting a taper. Various factors will determine your taper schedule, but some doctors reduce the dosage by 0.5 milligrams per week until the individual reaches 1mg. After that point, the dosage is often lowered by 0.25 mg per week. Everyone has unique needs, so a medical professional will evaluate you fully before making any decisions.

Klonopin Withdrawal Symptoms

Sleeplessness, anxiety, and irritability are some early withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal from Klonopin can start as late as 72 hours after the last dose, but usually begins within 24 hours, depending on the person and their metabolism.

You may experience Klonopin withdrawal symptoms for up to a week. These can include:

Sleeplessness and ongoing trouble staying asleep

Anxiety and feeling unusually on edge

Irritability and sudden mood changes

Nausea and an unsettled stomach

Vomiting and difficulty keeping food down

Muscle spasms and tight or cramping muscles

Dizziness and feeling lightheaded or unsteady

Symptom severity increases with time and peaks at the end of the first week. Initial withdrawal is usually manageable, and symptoms tend to be mild when you slowly taper. Anxiety may return after tapering, but it is often manageable and should gradually improve, fading by months two to three after withdrawal.

Emergence or Recurrence of Mental Health Conditions

People misusing Klonopin may not address their underlying mental health conditions. When they stop taking it, hidden symptoms can return, including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, confusion, and even delirium.

Sleep Deprivation

Klonopin is often used as a sleep aid, so stopping it can lead to trouble sleeping. People may have insomnia, disturbing dreams, night sweats, and feel hyper-alert, which can be especially frustrating during withdrawal.

Depression

Klonopin is not typically prescribed for depression, but it can ease anxiety that sometimes comes with it. After stopping Klonopin, symptoms like depression, sadness, loss of interest, and lack of motivation may worsen.

If you are struggling with depression, a mental health professional can help you find an effective treatment plan.

Klonopin Dependence Treatment

Substance use disorder is difficult to overcome without medical supervision. Confiding in a peer may be comforting, but regularly speaking with a healthcare professional is more helpful. Once you begin treatment, you can take the following steps to smooth the rest of the path to recovery.

1. Admit Your Klonopin Dependency

It’s important to tell your loved ones about your Klonopin dependency. Friends and family can offer support to help you recover. Being honest about how you have been using Klonopin allows them to understand your situation and learn how they can support your recovery.

2. Check Your Environment

Your environment plays a major role in both addiction and recovery. Easy access to Klonopin or other addictive drugs increases your risk and makes recovery less likely. Living with loved ones who also misuse substances can be another barrier. Assess your environment and make changes that support your recovery.

Overdoses are a difficult but critical topic to discuss. Every year, families and communities lose loved ones to opioid overdoses, whether it’s from opiate use or opioid addiction. Medications like Narcan (naloxone) are helping prevent many of these deaths.

Let’s discover what Narcan does, how you use it, and why it’s an important part of building overdose awareness.

Opioid Overdose Signs to Look Out For

Overdoses can look different from person to person. Common signs of an opioid overdose include:

Slowed or stopped breathing

Blue lips or fingernails

Unconsciousness

Gurgling or choking

Limp body and limbs

Pale-looking, clammy skin

Slow or non-existent pulse

If you see these signs, act immediately and administer Narcan, then call 911.

How Does Narcan Work?

Narcan’s main use is reversing opioid overdoses. Opioids like heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, and morphine work by attaching to receptors in the brain. When too much is taken, these receptors become overwhelmed, leading to slowed or stopped breathing.

Narcan works by blocking these opioid receptors and “kicking out” the opioids that are causing the overdose. This allows normal breathing to return.

Important: Narcan only works for opioid overdoses. It does not reverse overdoses caused by cocaine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, or alcohol.

What makes Narcan effective:

Safe and easy to use

Works within 2–3 minutes

No medical training needed

Harmless if not needed

Naloxone vs. Narcan: Differences and Uses

Narcan is the brand name for one form of naloxone, specifically, the nasal spray used to reverse opioid overdoses. But naloxone can be used in other ways, depending on the situation. Some medical uses include:

Treating constipation in patients taking pain medications

Helping patients wake up safely after surgery when they’ve had strong opioid anesthesia

Making it harder for people to misuse certain medications by injecting them (like in Suboxone)

Forms of Naloxone: Nasal Spray vs. Injection

There are two primary forms of naloxone:

Nasal Spray (Narcan): The most common form and available over the counter since 2023. It’s beginner-friendly and easy to administer.

Injectable Naloxone: Typically used by EMTs or medical professionals in emergency settings.

Because of its accessibility, Narcan nasal spray is recommended for community use.

Does Narcan Have Any Risks?

Narcan is predominantly safe, but there are a few things to be aware of:

Those who use opioids regularly might go into withdrawal instantly after a naloxone dose

Individuals may wake up confused, disoriented, or angry

Narcan wears off after 30–90 minutes, and the opioids may still be active in the body, meaning another overdose could occur without medical help.

Don’t worry about using naloxone on someone who doesn’t need it. If they don’t have opioids in their system, it won’t have any harmful effects.

How to Use Narcan in an Emergency

If you find yourself in a situation where a loved one has overdosed, follow these steps to administer Narcan nasal spray:

Pull off the cap and stick the device in their nostril

Push hard to spray the medicine

Call 911 right away

Stay with them until the ambulance comes

If they don’t wake up in 2–3 minutes, give them another dose

How Long Does Narcan Last?

Narcan works in about 2–3 minutes, with effects lasting 30–90 minutes. The opioids or opiates that caused the overdose may still remain in the body after this time period. This means that, when the Narcan stops working, you can overdose all over again. Always make sure you contact emergency services for proper medical help.

Can You Get Narcan Over the Counter?

Yes, you can usually find this medication at:

Pharmacies

Local health departments

Community groups

Some schools and workplaces

Many states have Good Samaritan laws, which means you won’t get arrested for calling 911 during an overdose, and those who try to help are protected.

How Long Does OTC Narcan Last?

Over-the-counter naloxone is fine for use for about three years after it was made. Always be sure to check the date and swap it out when it expires.

Why Everyone Should Know About Narcan

Maybe you don’t use opioids, and maybe nobody in your family does. But a neighbor, colleague, or community member might, and they can get hurt. Overdoses don’t discriminate and can happen regardless of how often or long someone has used opioids.

Knowing how to use Narcan is a skill that could save someone’s life. When we talk openly about naloxone and how it works, we help break down any stigmas or knowledge barriers. This can help protect more people.

These feelings are completely normal when adjusting to a substance-free lifestyle after completing your treatment program or starting recovery. Navigating social situations is a new skill, but with the right tools, you can stay on track and protect your progress even in challenging settings.

Peer Pressure and Addiction: How to Build Social Wellness

Social wellness means surrounding yourself with people who lift you up; it’s a part of relapse prevention. Gatherings that involve substances when you’re in recovery can be tricky, especially if those around you aren’t understanding of your sobriety.

Why Social Settings Can Be Challenging

Social gatherings can be challenging when you’re in recovery, for several reasons:

Seeing alcohol everywhere triggers your brain’s old patterns

You relied on substances to feel relaxed around people before

Everyone else seems fine, while you feel anxious and out of place

You think people will judge you or find you boring when not intoxicated

Types of Peer Pressure in Addiction Recovery

Pressure to use again can come in different forms. Each type can influence your sobriety, either positively or negatively.

Direct vs. Indirect

Direct: “Come on, just one drink won’t hurt.”

Indirect: Being the only sober person while everyone parties around you

Positive vs. Negative

Positive: Friends who cheer for your sobriety and encourage you to keep it up

Negative: People who guilt you or act like you’re ruining the “party mood”

Verbal vs. Internal

Verbal: Comments about why you’re not drinking or jokes about your sobriety

Internal: Your own thoughts telling you to just give in and fit in

5 Tips to Help You Stay Sober and Confident at Social Events

After choosing sobriety and working to get clean, it can be daunting to potentially risk any progress. These practical steps can help you stay prepared and lower the chance of relapse at a social event.

1. Plan Ahead With Wellness in Mind

Don’t walk into parties unprepared. These steps can help:

Choose events where you know you’ll feel safe

Set a time limit before you leave (you can start small)

Have your own car or a guaranteed safe ride home

Bring a sober buddy who gets what you’re going through

2. Communicate Clearly

Practice responses in advance so you feel more prepared:

“I don’t drink.” (short and honest)

“I’m driving.” (gives people a reason they understand)

“No, thanks.” (lets you change the subject)

Stay friendly, but don’t negotiate your choice

3. Maintain a Strong Support System

A supportive network makes it easier to stay sober. Strengthen your recovery by:

Hang out more with people who support your goals

Distance yourself from friends who pressure you to use

Make new friends through recovery meetings or hobbies

Ask for help when you need it

4. Bring Your Own Drinks or Activities

When you’re in recovery, it can feel like many things are outside your control. At parties, focus on what you can control:

Always have or bring a non-alcoholic beverage so you know it’s safe

Suggest activities that don’t center around drinking or using

Volunteer to be the designated driver

Keep your hands busy with gum, your phone, or your keys

5. Celebrate Your Progress

Remind yourself why you chose recovery, especially when temptation feels strong. Celebrate how far you’ve come by:

Think about the improvements in your life since getting sober

Track and calculate your sobriety progress

Use social events to practice your new skills

Notice how clear your thinking is now

Share your growth with loved ones

Connect With a Social Life That Supports Your Recovery

Improving your social health stems from genuine connection. Recovery allows you to engage openly and healthily because your brain is less focused on your next “high.” To maintain healthy relationships in social settings, you can:

Homelessness and drug addiction often go hand in hand. Sadly, many people struggling with both issues can’t get the help they need. A substance use disorder can develop because of the stress involved with being homeless. Unfortunately, many of these people also have psychiatric disorders that further complicate their situation. Seeking treatment would be beneficial, but many homeless drug users don’t know where or how to get help. Without treatment, they continue to be stuck in this cycle of homelessness and addiction. Not only does this situation affect the individual, but it impacts the entire community by putting public health at risk, increasing incarceration costs, and creating loss of tourism and economic growth.

Understanding the Connection

The relationship between homelessness and drug addiction is complex. For many individuals, their drug use is a result of their homelessness. They turn to self-medicating in order to cope with their situation. Others find themselves homeless because of their substance use disorders. Breaking the cycle of homelessness and addiction requires proper care and treatment, which isn’t easy for these people to find.

There are several contributing factors to this unfortunate situation.

Mental Health Issues

Mental health issues make it difficult to maintain stable and affordable housing. In severe cases, their mental health can affect their ability to work. Without a regular income, the expense of housing can seem unattainable.

Trauma

Domestic violence is a contributing factor, especially among women and children. Violence triggers homelessness when victims flee their homes without having a solid plan in place. Without a place to live, they end up in shelters, living in their cars, or simply on the street. Staying in a harmful situation doesn’t work either. The longer they stay in a traumatic situation, the more vulnerable they are to homelessness and addiction. Along with physical abuse, the mental anguish of domestic violence can leave one with low self-esteem, making it feel impossible to improve their life.

Lack of Social Support

Without support services for homeless drug users, these people have a hard time trying to break this cycle. They use drugs and alcohol to forget the situation they’re in, which makes it even harder to get back on their feet.

Mental Illness

Having a mental illness makes it challenging to find employment and stable housing. Many of these other contributing factors can lead to mental illness, making this problem even more complicated.

Family Conflict

The LGBTQ+ community is especially vulnerable to this. Coming out to loved ones is hard. Their family may kick them out or make them feel unsafe in their homes. Many young adults who aren’t ready to be on their own, end up in an out-of-control spiral leading to addiction.

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, 38% of homeless individuals depend on alcohol. In addition, 26% depend on other substances, and 30% are dealing with mental health issues. A lack of affordable housing increases addiction and mental illness. Without enough treatment services available, these people have a difficult time when it comes to breaking the cycle.

Systemic failures add to this cycle. When society doesn’t support people who are at risk of becoming homeless, the problem continues. Areas that let these people down are healthcare services, correctional institutes, and child welfare. Those who do end up in the care of these services are often let down. They are released from jail and hospitals before they are fully prepared to return to their community. When society fails to address issues like wages, racial inequality, and affordable housing, homelessness and addiction rise.

Causes and Challenges

There are many challenges faced by homeless addicts, as well as those on the verge of losing their homes. Unemployment is a significant factor. After being unemployed for a long time, it’s easy to slip into homelessness. Without a reliable income, one can’t make their monthly rent or mortgage payment. This leads to eviction. Once an individual is on the streets, it can seem impossible to find a job. The majority of homeless people want to work but can’t because they don’t have a permanent address.

The cost of living continues to rise. Unfortunately, wages haven’t gone up at the same rate. This makes covering everyday expenses a challenge. It’s impossible to plan ahead for unexpected emergencies once an individual reaches this point. One unexpected accident, injury, or illness can wipe out what money they do have. As a result, there’s no money left over for housing. Once they find themselves without a home, they quickly become trapped in poverty as it becomes more difficult to hold a job, save money, or overcome obstacles such as addiction.

For families, this becomes a greater challenge. Families are put into shelters or low-income housing, which makes them more visible to social services. If a parent is suffering from a substance use disorder, they are often reported and become separated from their children. Others face criminal charges and are incarcerated, which also leads to losing their children. This isn’t an ideal situation for anyone involved, as the adults continue to turn to drugs and alcohol for comfort, making it harder to get their children back.

Another problem is a lack of money and assistance with health care. Many people are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage because they can’t afford it. Seeking health care results in struggling to buy food, pay rent, or pay their utilities. Rather than face homelessness, they neglect checkups and avoid substance use treatment programs.

The Impact of Homelessness and Addiction on Individuals and Communities

The impact of addiction on homelessness affects everyone in their community. Homeless addicts are more likely to commit crimes as well as become victims of crime. The crimes are typically nonviolent, such as theft and burglary.

Crimes like sleeping in public places, panhandling, loitering, and sidewalk sitting lead to incarceration. Not only do homeless addicts engage in these activities more often, but they’re also more likely to be policed for them.

Health disparities among the homeless have long-term effects on their health and well-being. These individuals face barriers when it comes to getting healthcare. They don’t have access to transportation, insurance, or identification. This is unfortunate because their homelessness leaves them vulnerable to impaired immune systems.

Those who rely on mainstream services for help, such as hospitals, emergency rooms, the criminal justice system, child welfare, and income support, put a strain on the community. The cost of providing these services increases as the rate of homelessness and addiction rises. It becomes a burden on society.

There’s a great need for comprehensive solutions to address these intertwined issues. Many homeless individuals with substance use disorders don’t know where to go for help. Even if there are programs available, they may not think they have the resources to get help.

The earliest of the stages of addiction is the experimental phase. Experts state that this period can last from a person’s first dose until they start taking regularly. For most people, this stage is all they ever experience with a drug. Remember: many people use drugs and never develop an addiction. Therefore, the stages of addiction recovery for most here is more comfortable to handle. All they have to do is walk away from a drug to stop using it. If you are in this stage, stop right now before things get worse.

Establishing Patterns

When you don’t quit during the earliest stages of addiction, you often end up falling into a usage routine. This stage occurs when you create patterns that dictate how you use drugs or alcohol. For example, you may get drunk every Friday and Saturday night and recover on Sunday. At this point, your stages of addiction recovery is a little harder to manage. Simply put, you’ll have accepted a substance as part of your life. Many, many people are at this stage of addiction in the world today. And, thankfully, most never get any worse.

As the addiction worsens, people may start venturing outside of their standard patterns of abuse. Typically, this results in people taking risks that they shouldn’t. For example, you may get drunk every weekday and drive home from the bar. Or you may start buying prescription drugs illegally to feed your opiate addiction. Unfortunately, care during the late stages of drug addiction like this one may be harder to handle. People at the “risk-taking” stage often feel invincible or in control of the situation. Some might even become addicted to the thrill of abusing substances in a risky way. During the month of September, National Recovery Month is a time where individuals, organizations, and treatment centers create awareness about drug and alcohol addiction, dependency, and recovery. National Recovery Month 2023 is sponsored by the Abuse and Mental health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The goal of Recovery Month is to educate Americans on how to avoid addiction or get help for addiction. There are numerous services available in nearly every town across the country. We also designate September as a time to remember those who have fallen to addiction and celebrate those who have overcome dependency.

One of the most important issues surrounding substance abuse is overcoming the stigma surrounding addiction and treatment. Liberty Bay Retreat partners with SAMHSA to remove the stigma so that people can see more clearly to understand the benefits of recovery. Overcoming an addiction means rising above the false cultural perceptions of both drugs and rehab. Society has a way of glamorizing harmful substances while demonizing or trivializing treatment centers. During the month of September and throughout the year, we make great strides to counter the harmful stigmas created by culture.

You may have heard about dopamine, the feel-good hormone in our brains. But few people understand the depth of dopamine’s connection to substance abuse and addiction. This natural chemical is a neurotransmitter that travels along four major pathways in the brain and body, carrying signals related to our thoughts, feelings, and movements. Dopamine’s signaling along one of these pathways, the mesolimbic pathway, responds to drug use. This “reward pathway” motivates some behaviors closely tied to survival instincts.

Terms like neurotransmitters, the ideas of dopamine circuits, and the mesolimbic pathway can sound overwhelming. Simply put, addictive substances cause dopamine to flood the reward pathway creating surges of pleasure or “dopamine rushes,” ten times more powerful than any naturally occurring reward. These good feelings make you want to use your drug more, leading to addiction. At the same time, the ongoing surge of dopamine changes how the brain is wired, making it more difficult to stop using substances. When you try to quit your substance use, you struggle because of the ill feelings of withdrawal experienced in the absence of the dopamine surge.

As we dig deeper into the dopamine pathway and how it relates to substance use, remember that you are not alone in your journey to stop abusing drugs or alcohol. Despite the dopamine surge, you can quit your substance use and start a new life of greater productivity, happiness, and wellness. The key is seeking help from qualified professionals who understand the science of addiction and how to overcome it safely. You can find these professionals at Liberty Bay Recovery Center in Portland, Maine. The good news is that the brain is a miraculous organ; without the effects of drugs and alcohol, it can rewire itself and return to a healthy balance.

Drugs and the Dopamine Pathway

Each drug works differently in the brain and body. But all commonly abused substances affect the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, or reward circuit, by increasing dopamine levels in the brain. Drugs and alcohol are not the only substances leading to dopamine surges along this circuit. The same effects occur for all addictive substances and compulsions, such as:

Heroin

Cocaine

Methamphetamine

Opioids

Alcohol

Tobacco

Eating Disorders

Gambling

Compulsive Exercise

Sex Addiction

The mesolimbic dopamine pathway controls motivated behaviors and drives continued drug use even when you know it is bad for you. Scientists only discovered this critical connection between substance abuse and the brain within the last 50 years. They labeled the section of the brain affected by drugs and alcohol as the brain reward region in humans and other animals.

You continue using drugs or drinking because your brain rewards you. The dopamine pathway carries the reward signals with each use, such as feeling warm, calm, energized, satisfied, social, or otherwise pleased. However, when you do not use substances, you experience unpleasant feelings that drive you into drug-seeking behaviors. This is much like the cycle of eating food, feeling satisfied, then feeling hungry for more.

Although it sounds like science fiction, the reward circuit and its stimulation by drugs and alcohol are visible in imaging studies. Scientists describe it as being like a traffic hub with many signals. The circuitry is the dopamine pathway, and the signals are the dopamine surges influenced by the substances you take. This pathway is embedded in the part of your brain that sits atop the brainstem. This is the midbrain, a section developed about 500 million years ago in vertebrates. From the midbrain, the circuitry travels toward the front of the brain.

How an Addicted Brain Works

Drugs, alcohol, or other addictive behaviors cause dopamine surges along the mesolimbic pathway, driving a desire to continue the feeling. But what does addiction do to the brain?

Physical and Chemical Changes

According to scientists, addiction physically changes and rewires the brain, particularly along the dopamine pathway. Although addiction is now commonly called substance use disorder (SUD), it is defined as a chronic brain disease. It is not a matter of self-control or making up your mind. However, like other chronic diseases, such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes, addiction can be treated with the help of professionals.

Prolonged substance abuse can have additional adverse effects on the brain. Memory, concentration, and the ability to learn are all impacted by substance abuse. In addition, you make bad decisions and exercise poor judgment because of physical and chemical changes in your brain. Even when you want to quit, breaking the drug-seeking and using cycle can seem impossible.

Tolerance

Each use causes the brain to associate the dopamine rush with the substance. Eventually, this association will override the brain’s natural ability to feel pleasure. As the substance takes control of the brain, the reward center becomes overstimulated, and the pathways are overwhelmed. Making it difficult for the brain to handle the floods of dopamine. As a result, the brain desensitizes, and the effect of the substance decreases. This tolerance makes getting high harder and harder.

Because of tolerance and reduced dopamine sensitivity, feeling natural pleasure becomes more difficult without substances. As a result, you feel more compelled to get high again to feel happy or satisfied. But because of tolerance in the brain, you need higher and higher doses. Drug cravings also begin. This is why people use the drug more often or in more significant amounts than ever. It is the slippery slope to serious addiction.

Making the Recovery Journey Easier

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), more is known about how drugs affect the brain than any other brain science. This advanced knowledge benefits anyone seeking addiction recovery. For example, medical detox centers like Liberty Bay Recovery Center use evidence-based methods to make withdrawal easier for clients ending their substance abuse. These methods help the brain heal and restore healthy balance along the dopamine pathway.

This does not mean that addiction recovery is easy. Some neurological changes last longer than others. One such change is an ongoing vulnerability to addictive substances through relapse. That vulnerability proves why rehab treatment is so critical after detox.

Because medical detox centers understand withdrawal better than ever, this process is more comfortable than in decades past. Detox centers provide what the brain and body need to ease the transition from physical dependence to sobriety. This support includes personal comforts, security, nutritious meals, hydration, supervision, therapy, and medications. Of course, precise methods vary from one detox center to the next. But medical detox is the safest pathway for clients seeking to end their drug or alcohol abuse.

Alcohol Withdrawal

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms treated in medical detox include:

Anxiety

Irritability

Sleeplessness

Restlessness

Nightmares

Sweating

Fast heart rate

High blood pressure

Nausea or vomiting

Hand tremors

Delirium Tremens

Seizures

Hallucinations

Some alcohol withdrawal symptoms, such as delirium tremens, and seizures, require immediate medical attention. Being in a medical detox center provides access to licensed healthcare professionals, making it a much safer environment than non-medical detox or at-home “cold turkey” withdrawal.

Drug-Specific Withdrawal

Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the drug or drugs being used and other factors. Common symptoms treated as part of drug detox in a medical detox center include:

Insomnia

Mood swings

Irritability

Anxiety

Depression

Aches and pains

Nausea

Fatigue

Hot and cold flashes

Fever and chills

Runny nose

Teary eyes

Hallucinations

Paranoia

Confusion

Tremors

As with alcohol withdrawal, some of these symptoms can require immediate medical attention. Emergency healthcare is accessible in a medical detox center.

Re-Establishing Homeostasis in the Brain after Addiction

Addiction recovery involves re-establishing homeostasis, or healthy balance, within the brain and its dopamine pathway. While this process begins with detox, achieving this will take far longer than seven to 14 days. While detox helps the brain start healing physically, there are also emotional and cognitive effects of long-term substance abuse. These effects are treated in a rehab program.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs

Types of rehab programs include:

Residential Inpatient Rehab

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Addiction Treatment Therapies

In rehab treatment, recovering clients have access to an array of therapies, like:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Individual and Group Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Addiction Education

Seeking Safety

Trauma Therapy

Relapse Prevention

Behavioral and trauma therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and contingency management prove especially helpful for recovery from substance use disorders. Each therapy type helps return homeostasis to the brain’s dopamine pathway.

Hallucinogens and Their Harmful Effects

Hallucinogens are drugs that change an individual’s perception of their environment, thoughts, and emotions. They are frequently divided into dissociative drugs, such as PCP, and classic hallucinogens, such as LSD. Hallucinogens, sometimes called psychedelic substances, can cause people to perceive things that aren’t real. As a result, they can impair a person’s ability to think logically and occasionally lead to strange and risky behavior.

Some hallucinogens are artificial, while others occur naturally in plants or mushrooms. In ancient times, individuals used hallucinogens in rituals for healing or religious purposes. More recently, people started using these drugs for social or recreational activities. Today people may use them to relieve stress, experience spirituality, feel different, or get high. Hallucinogen-related substance use disorders (SUDs) are less prevalent that involve drugs like opioids.

Hallucinogens: How Do They Work?

Classic hallucinogens change perception by interacting with the neurotransmitter serotonin’s brain circuits. In addition, these substances interfere with the prefrontal cortex, which controls mood, cognition, and perception. Hallucinogens also affect other areas that control arousal and physiological reactions to stress and panic.

How Pervasive Is Abuse of Hallucinogens and Dissociative Substances?

It appears that more Americans than ever are using hallucinogenic drugs. It is estimated that more than 5.5 million Americans aged 18 and older and over 3 million adults 26 and older use hallucinogens.

In a study published in 2022 in the journal “Addiction,” researchers determined that from 2002 to 2019, the number of Americans using hallucinogens has climbed among adults but declined among teenagers. For example, the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 7.3% of adults aged 18-25 reported using hallucinogens in the previous 12 months.

The market for psychedelic drugs in the United States was estimated to be worth $4.29 billion in 2021, and it’s anticipated to

Short-Term Effects of Hallucinogens

When using hallucinogenic substances, people may experience feelings, noises, and sights that don’t exist yet seem real to them. Some hallucinogenic drugs act quickly, while others take a few hours. The effects can persist for up to 12 hours and usually start 20 to 90 minutes after consumption. Also, the higher the dose of hallucinogenic substances consumed, the more it can affect the user’s personality, attitude, and environment.

Short-term effects of hallucinogens can cause users to have temporarily distorted senses: Seeing, hearing, touching, or smelling can be abnormal. Users can also have intense emotions and perceive time as passing more slowly.

Other short-term effects can include:

Restless and dizziness

Impulsivity and quick emotional changes

Accelerated heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure

Dry mouth, lack of appetite, and sweating

Tremors, numbness, and weakness

Long-Term Effects of Hallucinogens

When users abuse hallucinogens over a long period, tolerance can develop. According to studies, some users may quickly build a tolerance to the potent hallucinogen LSD. As a result, users may need to take progressively higher doses of the drug to get the same results. According to research, a user who becomes tolerant of one drug belonging to the hallucinogen class could also become tolerant of other substances in the same category. For instance, someone with a tolerance to LSD could be tolerant of psilocybin and mescaline. Yet, substances like amphetamines and marijuana that influence different neurotransmitter systems are not affected by tolerance to hallucinogens.

Classic hallucinogens have been linked to two long-term adverse effects: persistent psychosis and hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder (HPPD), sometimes known as “flashbacks.” Although each illness is uncommon, it occurs unexpectedly, it can happen more than is believed, and the two disorders can co-occur. Although the precise origins are unknown, these diseases occur more in individuals with a history of psychiatric issues. However, they can affect anyone who has used a hallucinogen even once.

Long-term effects of persistent psychosis can include:

Abnormal vision

Confused cognition

Paranoia

Mood swings

The long-term effects of hallucinogen persisting perception disorder include hallucinations, visual problems like seeing halos or paths connected to moving objects and symptoms that might be misinterpreted for neurological illnesses like a stroke or brain tumor.

Classic Hallucinogens

DMT (N, N-dimethyltryptamine)

Hallucinogenic tryptamine naturally exists in various plants and animals. Because of its potent psychedelic effects, some call it the “spirit molecule.” However, the drug is not approved for medical use and has a significant potential for misuse. It also has no medicinal purpose acknowledged or authorized by the federal government.

LSD (D-lysergic acid diethylamide)

A powerful synthetic substance that causes hallucinations. It is derived from ergot alkaloids. LSD leads to severe abnormal behavior, perhaps because of its capacity to block serotonin’s activity. However, the drug’s precise mechanisms are not known. As recently as the 1960s, LSD was used experimentally in medicine, and some modern researchers hope to use it for therapeutic purposes again.

Psilocybin (4-phosphoryl oxy-N, N-dimethyltryptamine)

Chemicals derived from specific dried or fresh varieties of hallucinogenic mushrooms found in Mexico, South America, and the southern and northwestern United States. As an indole-alkylamine, psilocybin is categorized as tryptamine. These chemicals are misused for their hallucinogenic and euphoric properties. They induce a “trip” effect and have a structure comparable to that of LSD. The impact on the central nervous system’s serotonin (5-HT) receptors likely causes hallucinogenic effects. The chemicals psilocybin or psilocin are found in approximately 180 mushrooms.

Peyote (mescaline)

A small, spineless cactus. The hallucinogen mescaline is its main ingredient. Since recorded history, peyote has been a cornerstone of Indigenous peoples’ sacred rituals in northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Peyote and mescaline abuse can lead to hallucinations, a changed sense of space and time, altered body image, and illusions to varying degrees. Additionally, users may feel a sense of euphoria, occasionally followed by anxiety.

251-NBOMe

Often used as an alternative to LSD or mescaline. NBOMe, often known as “n-bomb” or “smiles,” is a potent synthetic hallucinogen. This drug comes in various forms, but 25I-NBOMe, sometimes known as “25I,” is the most popular. Even a tiny dose of the drug might have effects that last up to 12 hours or more. At low doses, NBOMe has a psychedelic effect comparable to LSD. However, users claim that the drug’s side effects and after-results are worse than those of LSD. 25I-NBOMe’s effects also resemble those of methamphetamine. The size of six little grains of common table salt corresponds to a dosage of 750 micrograms, regarded as a moderate to high dose.

How Do Dissociative Drugs Work?

According to research, dissociative drugs like PCP, ketamine, and DXM impair the brain’s neurotransmitter glutamate functions at certain N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. These receptors are found throughout the brain nerve cells. Glutamate is a crucial component of cognitive functions, including learning and memory, emotion, and pain perception. Additionally, the neurotransmitter dopamine is affected by PCP.

Short-Term Effects of Dissociative Drugs

Dissociative drugs can cause users to experience floating sensations; visual and auditory abnormalities; dissociation, or feeling alienated from reality. Other side effects of dissociative drug use are anxiety, memory loss, and poor motor function, including bodily tremors and numbness. These unexpected side effects depend on the drug’s dosage, which often takes effect minutes after consumption and persists for several hours. Some users claim to have side effects for days.

Low doses of dissociative drugs can cause hallucinations as well as:

Numbness

Nausea, vertigo, and vomiting

Sensory perceptions, including changes in the user’s perception of sight, sound, form, time, and body image

Detachment from self and surroundings

High doses of dissociative drugs can cause:

Memory loss

Severe panic, fear, worry, paranoia, vulnerability, inflated strength, and aggressiveness

Harmful fluctuations in body temperature, respiration, heart rate, and blood pressure

Long-Term Effects of Dissociative Drugs

Although the long-term use of most dissociative drugs has not been thoroughly studied, research indicates that repeated PCP use can result in tolerance. Also, users can experience withdrawal symptoms, including yearning for the drug, headaches, and profuse sweating when drug use is suddenly stopped. Other side effects of chronic PCP use, which may last for a year or longer after use ceases, include:

Enduring speech problems

Memory loss

Sadness

Suicidal thoughts

Anxiety

Social disengagement

Common Dissociative Drugs

Ketamine

A dissociative anesthetic used in both human and veterinary medicine. Ketamine is a drug that can be used as an injectable liquid and is commonly known as special K, super K, and vitamin K, among other nicknames. When used illegally, ketamine can be ingested or evaporated to create a powder that users can snort. Unfortunately, users can place ketamine in beverages without being noticed because it has no flavor or smell. Ketamine can induce hallucinations, amnesia, and dream-like experiences. The sensations experienced by drug users range from a floating sensation to feeling detached from their bodies.

Dextromethorphan (DXM)

Over-the-counter (OTC) cough suppressants commonly used in cold treatments. Unfortunately, teenagers and adults sometimes misuse DXM in excessive doses to induce euphoria and auditory and visual hallucinations. Robo-tripping or “skittling” are slang terms used to refer to illicit DXM consumption. These words are taken from two of the most frequently abused remedies: Coricidin and Robitussin. Abusers of DXM claim to have increased perceptual awareness, distorted temporal perception, and visual hallucinations.

PCP (Phencyclidine)

A common illicit hallucinogenic street drug. It is a white powder that can be dissolved in alcohol or water. You can get PCP as a powder or liquid. PCP is a drug that affects your brain and mood, conduct, and perspective on the world around you by acting on your central nervous system. Scientists believe that PCP prevents specific brain chemicals from functioning normally.

Salvia (Salvia Divinorum)

An herb from the mint family and is used frequently for its hallucinogenic properties. It originates in southern Mexico and other regions of Central and South America. The Mazatec tribe has long used it in ceremonial rituals. Salvinorin A, the main hallucinogenic component of salvia, has made it one of nature’s most potent drugs. This drug has several side effects, including hallucinations, vertigo, and visual abnormalities. Salvia, Sally-D, and Maria Pastora are some of its street names.

Dangers of Hallucinogen Use

Intoxication from hallucinogens might result in accidents, strange or unsafe conduct, or suicidal thoughts; abuse or misuse can be detrimental with any drug or medication. Overdoses of classic hallucinogens like LSD, psilocybin, and mescaline are uncommon. However, dissociative substances like phencyclidine (PCP) or ketamine have a higher overdose risk. Additionally, high doses can cause other bodily harm. For example, using DXM in substantial amounts to produce hallucinogenic effects can harm the cardiovascular and neurological systems.

Treatment for Hallucinogen Use Disorder

Although there are no drugs with FDA approval for treating hallucinogen misuse, multiple forms of therapy are accessible. The most popular treatment is behavioral therapy, which has excellent potential for treating drug use disorders.

Additional methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), contingency management, and motivational enhancement, can help increase drug users’ motivation for sobriety. It can also improve their coping and communication skills, hone their problem-solving abilities, and increase their capacity to function in different spheres of their life while reducing the likelihood of relapse.

Hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder (HPPD), in which flashbacks may occur spontaneously, has no known treatment. To treat psychoses, a medical specialist can administer several antidepressant and antipsychotic medications. Another excellent treatment option is psychotherapy, which may assist patients in overcoming any anxiety or bewilderment they may be experiencing because of visual disturbances or long-term side effects of LSD use.

The first and most challenging step in recovering from alcohol addiction is accepting that you have become powerless over alcohol. Unfortunately, many people live in denial, failing to acknowledge that they have become alcoholics. It is challenging to help drug users who are still in denial. However, once you accept your condition, you must be ready to go forward by seeking help and following your doctor’s instructions. Generally, this will involve some form of alcohol rehab.

If so, you may wonder how long the alcohol rehab program will take. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question because the amount of time you spend in rehab depends on various factors. For example, the duration will depend on your state when you enroll in the program and how your doctor or therapist has designed the program. It will also depend on whether you are admitted to an inpatient or outpatient program. Whichever program you choose, the first step is likely to be detoxification.

Alcohol Rehab: Detoxification

As you continue drinking alcohol, your body gets a buildup of toxins. Detoxification refers to the process of eliminating these toxins from your body. This process will allow your mind and body to heal from the effects of alcohol without suffering too much from life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.

Because detoxing from alcohol can potentially be fatal, it is essential to be supervised by a medical professional such as a member of our team at Liberty Bay Recovery Center. The detoxification process and how long it takes vary from person to person. It will depend on how long you have used alcohol and whether you are also using other drugs. You will experience various psychological, emotional, and physical symptoms during detox. Once the process ends, you may enter the post-acute withdrawal phase, where your cravings and physical symptoms will subside. However, you will still have emotional and psychological issues lasting for weeks or months after detoxification.

Each detox case is unique. The detox process may only take a few days for some people, while others may require weeks or months. If you have been excessively drinking alcohol for many years, your detox period will likely be longer than it would for a person who has been drinking for only a few years. On average, the initial detox from alcohol lasts between 7 to 10 days. Sometimes, people may experience detox symptoms for up to 14 days. However, even after the initial detox symptoms have cleared, psychological and physical issues can linger for months.

Can You Detox on Your Own?

Some people prefer detoxing at home for fear of embarrassment, shame, or stigma. However, detoxing at home can be unproductive and dangerous. Detoxification, just like other treatments, needs the support of professionals. Also, detoxification may have serious side effects, like psychosis or seizures. This is why you should be in an environment where medical experts can supervise you.

How to Detox Safely

The safest way to detox is in a medically supervised setting. Medical detox programs provide the support, safety, and comfort you need. In a medical facility, you can get emergency help if you experience life-threatening withdrawal symptoms. Additionally, if you have any underlying medical conditions, your doctor will be on hand to take care of them. Your detox process will also be personalized to help you get the best results.

Alcohol Rehab: Inpatient Rehab

There are many types of inpatient alcohol rehab programs. You can opt for either long-term rehab or traditional inpatient rehab. Your circumstances and diagnosis determine how long you will be in treatment.

Long-Term Inpatient Alcohol Rehab

Long-term alcohol rehab may take anywhere between three and 12 months. You will live in the treatment facility with other drug users to help one another in your recovery journey. These programs may include family or individual counseling and group therapy. The doctors may also organize for you to join support groups.

Traditional Inpatient Alcohol Rehab

Traditional rehabilitation for alcoholics requires at least 28 days. This mode of treatment can be recommended if you are a moderate drinker. The rehab program may include counseling sessions and group therapies involving your family. The rehab may sometimes last up to three months, depending on your situation. Traditional inpatient alcohol rehab generally takes three months to complete.

While in the rehab facility, you will have to abide by certain rules and regulations. These rules vary from facility to facility and are tailored to ensure the patients get the best results. In addition, during your stay in the rehab, you will meet other addicts with whom you will be encouraged to form groups to participate in therapies together.

Some rehabs offer daily group therapies. There may also be individual therapies to address unique personal needs. Your days will be filled with activities to distract you from thinking about alcohol. Most of these activities include psychotherapies, 12-step meetings, and educational sessions to equip you with skills to maintain sobriety.

Can You Be Forced to Enroll in Inpatient Alcohol Rehab?

A parent or guardian can admit someone younger than 18 to rehab for alcohol without their consent. However, most states do not allow forcible rehab for adults. The main exception being a court sentence for an alcohol-related crime. However, your loved ones may feel inpatient alcohol rehab is the best option to save your life. In some states, loved ones can petition the court to have you involuntarily admitted to an inpatient rehabilitation program. The court will assess the situation and decide. Involuntary commitment to an inpatient alcohol rehab is often referred to as “sectioning.” Sectioning is often a last hope option for alcoholics who need urgent intervention.

Alcohol Rehab: Outpatient Programs

Outpatient alcohol rehab is a multistage program that does not require you to live at the treatment facility. The length of outpatient alcohol rehab programs will depend on your state and the facility that offers this service. On average, an outpatient alcohol rehab program takes about three months. There are three types of outpatient treatments for alcoholics: intensive outpatient treatment, and partial hospitalization.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)

Intensive treatment is necessary if you struggle with alcohol use and cannot stop drinking by using your willpower. You will live in your home as you receive this treatment but will spend long hours at the facility. In most cases, IOP treatment can take three months.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization requires more commitment than OP and IOP. It is recommended for heavy drinkers who need more care in a home setting. With this program, you will have to attend group meetings for five or seven days every week, and each session will last for between seven and eight hours. You can opt for this method if you require more support and intensive therapy. Your doctor can prescribe this treatment mode if you have a severe substance use disorder (SUD) or other underlying medical conditions. If you are unsure which type of outpatient treatment is best for you, leave this decision to your doctor, and stick to your doctor’s advice.

Advantages of Outpatient Alcohol Rehab

Outpatient alcohol treatment has many benefits. This treatment mode will ensure you have all the resources, tools, and skills you need to maintain sobriety. In addition, choosing a facility with a smaller group is advisable so you can receive more individualized attention and care. Other benefits of outpatient alcohol treatment include:

Engagement in evidence-based therapies, including eye movement reprocessing and desensitization, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

The treatment focuses on relapse prevention. You will be taught the techniques to help identify and prevent situations (triggers) that can cause relapse.

You will be taught life skills, including personalized vocational training and educational placement.

Alcohol Rehab: Aftercare

Once you complete your treatment, some facilities may allow you to join an alumni program as part of an ongoing aftercare plan.

How Long Does Aftercare Take?

Detox is only the first step in the treatment process. However, once you are successfully and safely detoxified, you must restructure your life to help build a solid foundation for your recovery. Aftercare programs can ensure that you maintain your sobriety for many years. Addiction treatment is an ongoing process that can extend for a lifetime. Once you graduate from a rehab facility, it may seem more straightforward to say no to drugs and alcohol, but as time goes by, you may relapse. This is what an aftercare program helps you avoid.

Aftercare is part of alcohol treatment and is a plan to support you and help you to avoid relapsing. Aftercare has no fixed duration because it is regarded as a new lifestyle. For example, some recovered alcoholics join support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), which considers membership permanent. Once you become a member of AA, there is no turning back.

What Constitutes a Good Aftercare Program?

For an aftercare program to be effective, it must have several activities and resources to keep the recovered alcoholic busy. The activities vary according to an individual’s needs though some activities are done in groups, like AA meetings. Common aspects of aftercare programs include:

Establishing a support system after you’ve completer alcohol addiction treatment

Sponsors, a mentor, or a guide who has been in recovery and worked through the steps.

Presence or recovery sessions such as AA’s 12-step meetings

Alumni groups with people who attended the same rehab facility

Group or individual therapy

Checking in with your case manager or counselor

Training for life skills like gaining financial freedom.

Counseling sessions, whether individual or group, are a crucial component of any aftercare program. Individual therapy sessions can help you work on what you missed during your rehab program. Your doctor will design a personalized program that meets your unique needs during such therapy.

On the other hand, a group therapy session is vital for helping you to work with others who also want to maintain their sobriety since working together as peers can help you fight cravings that can lead to relapses. Additionally, group sessions mean you will have a new group of friends to keep you away from your drinking buddies.

Recovery depends on your commitment to the treatment process. At Liberty Bay Recovery, our team will be happy to answer your questions or help you start on the path to a happier, healthier life of sobriety.
